As a native New Englander, whaling folklore leaves me spellbound. The legendary sperm whale is deeply woven into New England’s history and the whale remains as captivating today as it did in the mid-1800s, when the whaling industry had it’s iron grip on brave souls who were lured far out to sea to hunt these leviathans. For 200 years, whale oil illuminated the world’s cities and lubricated the industrial age before crude oil was discovered in 1859, ending the whaling industry in the blink of an eye. Art and literature depict harpooned whales thrashing and crushing whale boats and helpless men and take us back to this era with the harrowing tale of the whaleship Essex, and Melville’s epic Moby Dick.
